Why We Keep Coming Back to Kota Cotton Sarees

If you ask us which saree works best when someone wants something light, comfortable and easy to carry, Kota cotton is usually one of the first fabrics that comes to mind.

We have worked with many fabrics at Mudran, and every fabric has its own beauty. But there is something very practical about Kota. You don't have to wait for a wedding or a special occasion to take it out of your wardrobe. It is a saree you can actually wear through the day.

And in our weather, that matters.

So, what is special about Kota?

When you hold a pure Kota saree in your hands for the first time, its weight can actually surprise you.

A pure Kota saree is extremely lightweight — usually around 300 grams. Because the weave is so fine and airy, the fabric is also slightly transparent. This is a natural characteristic of Kota and not something we consider a drawback in the fabric.

If you look closely, you will notice the small check-like pattern in the weave. This is part of what gives Kota its familiar texture and breathable feel.

Another thing we often find customers are unsure about is the feel of pure Kota.

Pure Kota is soft and light. It is not supposed to be fluffy.

Sometimes people associate a fuller or fluffy-looking fabric with better quality, but that isn't how we judge Kota. An authentic pure Kota has a delicate, airy feel and falls softly when worn.

This lightness is actually one of the reasons we love the fabric.

Kota and handblock printing

We print many of our Kota sarees by hand, and we feel the fabric and handblock printing suit each other beautifully.

The interesting thing is that handblock printing never gives you the exact sameness of a machine print.

One block may take slightly more colour. One impression may be a little lighter. At some places you may notice a tiny overlap between two blocks.

When you see the artisan actually printing the saree, these little variations make complete sense. He is placing every block with his own hands, one after another, until the fabric is complete.

For us, these are not things that need to be corrected. They are simply part of a hand-printed saree.

Is Kota difficult to carry?

We get questions like this quite often, especially from customers who don't wear sarees every day.

In our experience, Kota is actually quite manageable because there isn't a lot of weight to deal with.

At around 300 grams, a pure Kota saree feels almost weightless compared with many heavier saree fabrics. It has enough character to make a beautiful drape without feeling bulky around the body.

We have customers choosing Kota for office wear, lunches, small functions and travelling. Some simply buy it because they want a saree they can wear for several hours without getting tired of it.

That, for us, is probably its biggest advantage.

You don't have to style it too much

We personally prefer not to over-style a beautiful handblock Kota.

A plain contrast blouse, earrings, a bindi and maybe a few bangles are often enough.

Because Kota is slightly transparent, the blouse and petticoat you choose can make a difference to the final look. A well-matched petticoat gives a neat finish without taking away the natural lightness of the saree.

If the print is already strong, let the print be the focus.

For a slightly dressier look, you can change the blouse and jewellery without changing the character of the saree.

One small thing before buying handmade Kota

If you are buying a handblock printed Kota saree, please don't examine it expecting every motif to be identical.

Look at it as something that has passed through human hands.

A small variation in a flower, a slightly lighter block impression or a tiny difference in placement can happen during hand printing.

In fact, when everything looks too perfect, we start looking more closely!

Of course, there is a difference between a genuine defect and a natural handblock variation. But the little irregularities that come from printing by hand are part of what makes these sarees interesting.

After working with sarees every day, we have realised that the pieces people reach for again and again aren't always the grandest ones in their wardrobe.

Quite often, they are simply the ones that feel good when worn.

And that is exactly where pure Kota fits in for us — soft, airy, slightly transparent and incredibly light.
